Data Center Technician Skills Checklist

Use evidence rather than a yes/no skills list
For each topic, score yourself 0 if unfamiliar, 1 if you can explain it and 2 if you can demonstrate it safely in an authorized lab. The score is a planning aid, not a hiring assessment. Choose the three weakest areas and create one specific practice artifact for each.
Six groups to assess
- Safety and authorization: explain change ownership, stop-work conditions and escalation boundaries.
- Hardware: identify server components and distinguish an alert from an established diagnosis.
- Networking: explain address, gateway, DNS and a basic traffic path.
- Cabling: read port/route records and explain labeling, handling and inspection procedures.
- Troubleshooting: isolate scope, preserve observations and choose a justified next test.
- Documentation: write a ticket with impact, timestamps, evidence and next owner.
Worked example: turn a weak score into a task
If DNS is a 0, your task is not “learn networking.” Write a one-page explanation of a lookup, a timeout and a nonexistent-name response, then use the fictional exercise in the DNS guide. If documentation is weak, produce a handover from that same exercise. One carefully explained artifact can develop multiple skills.
Practice a server-alert handover
Use a fictional alert at 09:10 on a lab server. State the alarm, reported user impact, last-known-good time and observations already available. Do not assume a failed component from an amber light alone. Identify the relevant runbook, authorization requirement and owner before suggesting a reboot, cable move or replacement.
Review at the end of the week
Re-score only after you can show the evidence. A diagram without a clear explanation does not establish understanding; a memorized definition without a safe demonstration remains a 1.
