How to Become a Network Engineer
Networking becomes easier when you build it in layers. Start with addressing and packet flow, then switching, routing, services, troubleshooting, security, and finally automation.
Master TCP/IP
Understand IPv4 addressing, subnetting, default gateways, ARP, ICMP, TCP, UDP, and common application ports.
Learn switching
Practice MAC tables, access ports, VLANs, trunks, STP concepts, and inter-VLAN connectivity.
Learn routing
Build static routes and then move into dynamic routing such as OSPF. Understand how routers choose paths.
Troubleshoot systematically
Check physical state, addressing, VLANs, gateways, routing, DNS, ACLs, and application reachability in a consistent order.
Build Cisco-style labs
Use a simulator or lab environment to configure switches and routers, then intentionally break configurations and repair them.
Use certifications strategically
CCNA is a strong structured networking path, but hands-on configuration and troubleshooting should accompany exam study.
